Clinton takes clean stove fight to India (AFP)

CHENNAI, India (AFP) ? US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday used a visit to India to highlight the damage done to women and children's health in poor countries by poor quality stoves.

The State Department estimates that nearly two million people die each year from respiratory illnesses and poisoning caused by inefficient or polluting stoves -- more than twice as many as are killed by malaria.

Clinton, who is behind a plan to provide 100 million homes with clean stoves by 2020, said Wednesday that two major business bodies, the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry would join the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.

The programme, launched by Clinton in 2010, connects researchers and manufacturers to promote the development of clean, practical stoves.

Clinton visited the southern city of Chennai after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi during her two-day trip to India.
