Slate is a kind of metaphoric rock that comes from an original shale-type sedimentary rock made of volcanic ash or clay. When slate is cut, it forms a flat sheet of stone which is commonly used for roofing and floor tiles. It is usually gray in color, especially when installed as roofing.
