Skin Disorders and Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages such as wine, when consumed in moderation, could prove healthy for you. But, excess alcohol intake can lead to many serious health issues. Skin disorders and alcohol are known to have a direct link. Continue reading to learn about the various skin disorders that could be caused or perhaps aggravated due to excess intake of alcohol.

Skin disorders caused due to alcohol can occur due to various factors. For example, the weakening of the liver reduces its ability to get rid of harmful toxins in the body, consequently affecting the skin. Too much alcohol affects the vitamin content in the body, especially vitamins A and C, the two very important vitamins needed for healthy skin. Alcohol causes short-term and sometimes long-term effects on our skin. Skin problems caused because of alcohol include the following:

Acne:?Too much alcohol consumption makes the liver weak, because the liver needs to work extra to eliminate the harmful toxins which are present in alcohol.

When these toxins are not released from the body, they can lead to acne breakouts. A weak liver can also lead to several other skin as well as health issues.

Red Blotchy Skin:?After a significant amount of alcohol intake, you can notice the skin on your face as well as your body becoming red and blotchy. This is because alcohol dilates the blood vessels, which remain like that until all the alcohol is flushed out of the body. Hence, the skin appears blotchy and red.

Rosacea:?This skin disorder is characterized by the appearance of acne like bumps, pink patches on the face, red eyes and broken blood vessels. Too much alcohol intake can aggravate and even worsen the condition. People who have a fair complexion are known to suffer from this skin disorder, which does not heal until the intake of alcohol is stopped.

Skin Dryness:?Alcohol leads to skin dehydration and makes the skin dry. In case you have skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, consuming alcohol could make the condition worse.

Wrinkles, Fine lines, and Crow's Feet:?As the skin becomes weak, it leads to the development of wrinkles, and fine lines as well as crow's feet. Too much alcohol intake causes the skin to age much faster.

Skin Paleness:?Even though some individuals experience skin redness after too much alcohol, some people?s skin becomes pale over time. The skin becomes dull and looks weak and tired.

It is vital to avoid or at least restrict the intake of alcohol if you want to maintain healthy and younger looking skin. It is also important to maintain proper skincare, and eat a healthy balanced diet as well as exercise regularly in order to maintain healthy skin.

These days, there are several skincare products and medications available in the market to help deal with various skin disorders. With regards to treating acne, medications such as Azelex cream have proved very effective. Azelex belongs to a category of medications referred to as Dicarboxylic acids, which can be utilized for treating mild as well as moderate acne. You can purchase Azelex from the neighborhood drugstore or order Azelex online. But, it is advised to seek advice from a dermatologist before deciding to Buy Azelex to treat acne.

Scientists have created and imaged the smallest possible five-ringed structure about 100,000 times thinner than a human hair and you'll probably recognise its shape.

A collaboration between the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the University of Warwick and IBM Research Zurich has allowed the scientists to bring a single molecule to life in a picture, using a combination of clever synthetic chemistry and state-of-the-art imaging techniques.

The scientists decided to make and visualise olympicene whose five-ringed structure was entered on ChemSpider, the RSC's free online chemical database of over 26 million records two years ago.

"When doodling in a planning meeting, it occurred to me that a molecular structure with three hexagonal rings above two others would make for an interesting synthetic challenge," said Professor Graham Richards CBE, RSC Council member.

"I wondered: could someone actually make it, and produce an image of the actual molecule?"

Chemists at the University of Warwick, Dr David Fox and Anish Mistry, used some clever synthetic organic chemistry the modern molecule designer's toolbox to build olympicene.

"Alongside the scientific challenge involved in creating olympicene in a laboratory, there's some serious practical reasons for working with molecules like this," said Dr Fox.

"The compound is related to single-layer graphite, also known as graphene, and is one of a number of related compounds which potentially have interesting electronic and optical properties.

"For example these types of molecules may offer great potential for the next generation of solar cells and high-tech lighting sources such as LEDs."

A first glimpse of the molecule's structure was obtained by Dr Giovanni Costantini and Ben Moreton at Warwick using scanning tunnelling microscopy. A higher resolution technique was however needed to unravel its atomic-level anatomy.

To truly bring olympicene to life, the Physics of Nanoscale Systems Group at IBM Research Zurich in Switzerland analysed the chemical structure of olympicene with unprecedented resolution using a complex technique known as noncontact atomic force microscopy. Using the technique IBM scientists imaged a single olympicene molecule just 1.2 nanometres in width, about 100,000 times thinner than a human hair.

"The key to achieving atomic resolution was an atomically sharp and defined tip apex as well as the very high stability of the system," explains IBM scientist Dr. Leo Gross. "We prepared our tip by deliberately picking up single atoms and molecules and showed that it is the foremost tip atom or molecule that governs the contrast and resolution of our AFM measurements."

###

This technique was first published in the journal of Science back in August 2009.

The chemical recipes for making olympicene, along with a whole range of other molecules, are posted on the ChemSpider Synthetic Pages (CSSP), where scientists can record and share the best ways to do specific reactions.

Educational Leadership:Meeting Students Where They Are:Why Teachers Should Try Twitter

William M. Ferriter

I've got an embarrassing confession to make: Until recently, I wasn't convinced that differentiating learning opportunities for students really mattered. Like many teachers, I would deliver one lesson each day, keeping my fingers crossed that I met everyone's needs. And even though I've always had a sense for the strengths and weaknesses of my individual students, I rarely drew on that knowledge to make specific changes in instruction or assignments.

The primary reason for my inability to embrace differentiation as a teacher was that, until recently, I'd never experienced differentiation as a learner. Like most practitioners, I've spent too much professional development time sitting in lectures delivered to entire faculties. No one offered preassessments, tiered lessons, or learning contracts to my colleagues or me. Instead, we plodded through courses designed to meet the needs of the majority. In fact, the structure of professional development programs in most schools sends conflicting messages about the importance of meeting learners where they are.

Differentiation has grown on me in the past 18 months, though, thanks to my experiences using the online networking tool Twitter. Twitter makes it easy to post short (140-character maximum), public, text-based messages to the Web?messages that any interested follower can see and respond to.

Although many Twitter users post personal messages that might be described as "digital noise" (such as "Having Chinese takeout for dinner"), teaching professionals have found ways to use Twitter to share resources and lend quick support to peers with similar interests. For educators who use this tool to build a network of people whose Twitter messages connect to their work, Twitter becomes a constant source of new ideas to explore.

Finding Someone to "Follow"

I began my work with Twitter by creating a free account, which anyone with an Internet connection can do by visiting http://twitter.com. I then started following the updates of Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach (@snbeach), a Teacher Leaders Network colleague and digital learning expert. Each time I signed into Twitter, I'd automatically see any thoughts that Sheryl had posted, sometimes including links to articles she was reading.

Although Sheryl's messages were not intended for me alone?all of her Twitter followers could see her posts?most were valuable to me because Sheryl and I are both interested in the changing nature of learning in the 21st century. We each study the kinds of skills students will need to be successful in tomorrow's world and the ways digital tools can facilitate meaningful experiences in today's classrooms. Exploring her Twitter posts challenged my thinking and led me to great resources without having to spend hours searching. Even as my Twitter network has grown, Sheryl's posts continue to help me. Just today, she shared a link to a collection of resources on teaching second languages that I can't wait to explore (http://www.onlineuniversities.com/blog/2009/11/100-tips-tools-to-teach-your-child-a-second-language).

Next, I started following the Twitter messages shared by many of the creative educators I found on the Twitter4Teachers wiki (http://twitter4teachers.pbworks.com), seeking the same kinds of people I like to exchange ideas with in real life. I focused on finding middle school language arts and social studies teachers or teachers interested in technology, knowing that people with my interests were likely to point me toward resources I could use.

I also followed Twitter users who were recommended by digital peers or whom I knew in person. Each of their updates appeared automatically on my Twitter homepage. I could look inside the minds of motivated peers to learn about the new projects they were undertaking, the research reports they were studying, and Web sites they were exploring. As my comfort with Twitter grew?a process that took a few months, as is typical for new users?I became an active contributor to this knowledge network.

I'm constantly jazzed by my Twitter network because I have easy access to a stream of customized information and ideas that motivate me?one characteristic of differentiated learning. This information is customized because I follow only Twitter posters who discuss topics I'm eager to learn about. Although I can't read every message generated by the 200 education professionals whose updates I now follow, I skim through posts for 20 minutes each morning and afternoon.

Using the Reply and Direct Message options, I join conversations with individual members of this digital community, offering suggestions, asking questions, and celebrating successes. As with most digital conversations, I can either make my replies visible to everyone who's following my updates or target private replies to certain individuals.

I now turn to Twitter friends for help in the same way that I turn to the teachers on my hallway. Recently, a friend in my Twitter feed pointed me to a great strategy for structuring classroom discussions, a practice I'd been struggling with (http://angelacunningham.wordpress.com/2009/05/teaching-students-to-dialogue.html).

Opportunities for Customization

What lessons have I learned from Twitter? First, I finally understand how much differentiated learning matters. My own motivation levels have skyrocketed, I'm accessing ideas connected to my professional interests, and I've taken ownership of my own learning.

This has me convinced that we can use digital tools to differentiate learning for students, too. Although Twitter may not be appropriate in all situations? elementary students would struggle to build meaningful networks of peers, and schools would have to actively address Internet safety?it's being used successfully by several inventive high school teachers. Shelly Blake-Plock, for example, a Maryland Latin and art history teacher, is integrating Twitter into research, discussion, and vocabulary work in his classroom. Blake-Plock shares ideas on using Twitter in the classroom in this entry on his blog, Teach Paperless: http://teachpaperless.blogspot.com/2009/05/best-practices-in-twitter-enhanced-high.html.

Teachers must identify how applications like Twitter can facilitate their learning. Digital opportunities to connect with new content and communities can accelerate learning for every student?but only after teachers become efficient digital learners, too.

William M. Ferriter (@plugusin on Twitter) teaches 6th grade language arts and social studies in Raleigh, North Carolina, and blogs about the teaching life at The Tempered Radical (http://teacherleaders.typepad.com/the_tempered_radical). He is the coauthor of Building a Professional Learning Community at Work: A Guide to the First Year (Solution Tree, 2009); 919-363-1870; wferriter@hotmail.com.

Cowgirl tennis qualifies for NCAA tournament

A small room erupted in celebration in Gallagher-Iba on Tuesday evening, for the OSU women?s tennis team received the news that its season would continue.

Coach Chris Young and his team huddled around a large screen TV to hear their name announced as one of the 64 teams that will compete in the NCAA Women?s Tennis Team Tournament.

?I?m really excited for the girls,? Young said. ?When I came here three years ago, I knew the challenges that were ahead of us. Today is the culmination of three years of hard work and determination, and it?s great for the girls.?

The Cowgirls will face Georgia Tech in the first round, a welcomed opponent.

?I knew that we would be right there playing a team that is pretty even with us,? Young said. ?We have seen them quite a bit. When you have some familiarity for an opponent, it helps us prepare for the moment.?

The Cowgirls? first match in the single-elimination tournament will be May 11, and Young said his team would be well prepared.

?I have experience in this, understanding how the schedule works out this first week will be tricky with finals, but after this week my experience will help them make the transition to post season,? Young said.

Junior C. C. Sardinha anticipated the reward of a postseason, and her hopes built up going into the selection show.

?We are pumped,? Sardinha said. ?There were hints that we would get in. It was just nice to finally hear it.?

Sardinha echoed the confidence that the Cowgirls are taking into the postseason and gave a glimpse of what has been behind the team?s success this season.

?We will play Stanford, UCLA, anyone; bring it on,? she said.

If the Cowgirls knock down their first three opponents, they could face UCLA in the quarterfinals, but that is a long way off.

Malika Rose, a junior for the Cowgirls, said the team is focused on the task at hand.

?We had this goal at the beginning of the year, but we didn?t think it was that close,? Rose said. ?We just want to take it one match at a time and focus on our advantage in the doubles matchups.?

Precisely Why Pet Dog Treats Won't Assist You During Preparing ...

I?m sure you?ve observed this before, and you may even do it yourself on a regular basis. Pick up a dog bone then proceed to hang it before your dog as you tell him or her just what to do. Roll over, play dead, sit, speak and I?ll present you with this treat. Obviously your dog is going to obey, they really want that treat. If you?d like to hang a peanut butter cup before me, I?ll play dead or roll over too. Does this mean that I am trained to roll over? Or does it basically mean I truly love peanut butter cups?

Any time training for your service dog certification you?re very best served to leave the doggie snacks behind. The important thing to productive service dog training is to help make the dog admire you. This cannot be achieved in cases where the dog just looks at you as a source of doggie snacks.

We constantly recommend utilizing a praise strategy whenever training your dog. Praise can be a simple spoken phrase, or possibly a pat upon the head. In the event that the dog receives a treat every time he or she follows a command you have not earned the dogs respect. You have turned your dog directly

No pudieron controlarle.

Augmented reality offers a new layer of intrigue

IF YOU ever come across a photograph of communist-era East Berlin, or modern Pyongyang in North Korea, the cityscapes look drab and featureless. Billboards, advertising hoardings, neon signs, shopfronts and graffiti are conspicuous by their absence.

To future eyes, that is how drab today's London and New York will appear. Not because of an even greater proliferation of advertising and street art but because of an in-vogue technology called augmented reality (AR), through which digital information and graphics are overlaid onto the physical world.

If predictions come true, towns and cities will soon be teeming with digital annotations floating over landmarks, businesses and people. You will need AR glasses to see them, but they are likely to be as commonplace as cellphones.

Visions of this future promoted by the likes of Google, which is launching a pair of AR glasses this year, tend to have a clean, corporate gloss. Good luck to them: as AR becomes common, everyday people will want to add their own comments, images and videos. Some have already begun to use smartphone apps to tag "digital graffiti" onto the physical world (see "Reality respray: The hidden digital world uncloakedMovie Camera"). Some of these offerings are useful; others are aesthetic, trivial or personal. Many are angry, subversive or offensive. In other words, all the virtues and vices of the social web are being daubed onto the physical world, with interesting and challenging consequences.

Consider the implications for business. Today an anti-capitalist would be arrested for scribbling a slogan on the wall of a McDonald's, but they are free to draw it digitally. Disgruntled customers could plaster company buildings with complaints; hacktivists could digitally "occupy" the corporate headquarters of their targets.

Equally, an extremist could post slogans on a graveyard or government building, or a protester might decide to reveal the location of an animal-testing lab. Individuals are not immune - people could be digitally tagged without their knowledge. The tag could be a compliment. Equally possibly it could be an insult or embarrassing photo. Electing not to wear the glasses will be as effective as closing your eyes and wishing it would go away.

Negotiating our way through the rights and wrongs of this while protecting free speech, privacy and reputation will be tortuous. How should society respond? It is not hard to envisage corporate and political powers demanding control, censorship and punishment of "offenders". They may well get it; owners of AR apps may concede that some content crosses a line, and remove it. Yet the law, with its infamous inability to keep pace with technology, will provide a blunt tool at best.

Laws must be upheld, of course, but if we have learned anything from internet history, bottom-up control is likely to be more democratic and effective. Already the users of AR apps "upvote" useful or funny annotations. Unpleasant or abusive ones tend to languish largely unread.

The internet has made the world harder to control and contain but it has also made it immensely more interesting. The same is likely to be true of AR. Let's embrace it. Few people would choose to live in Pyongyang over London or New York.

Jason Salzman: How Does Singleton's List of Facts About Obama Presidency Prove Liberal Media Bias?

Please take a look at the paragraph below, from Dean Singleton's introduction to a speech by President Barack Obama, and tell me if "liberal media bias" leaps out at you.

"He inherited the headwinds of the worst economic recession since the Great Depression," said Singleton, who's a former Chair of the MediaNews newspaper chain and of the Associated Press. "He pushed through Congress the biggest economic recovery plan in history and led a government reorganization of two of the big three auto manufacturers to save them from oblivion. He pursued domestic and foreign-policy agendas that were controversial to many, highlighted by his signature into law of the most comprehensive health care legislation in history. And the budget plans proposed by the president on the one hand, and Republicans on the other hand, aren't even on the same planet."

Do you see anything offensive in Singleton's words here, delivered prior to a recent speech before hundreds of journalists in Washington.

All I see is facts.

A big recession. That's true. Yes, he saved two of three auto companies. Yes, his agenda was controversial and distinct from the GOP agenda. And yes, his economic recovery plan was one of the biggest in U.S. history.

Everything Singleton said was factual. He wasn't being balanced, but Mitt Romney was on deck to address the same group of journalists the next day.

Besides, are you really going to recite the leader of the free world's failures after he's doing you the favor of speaking to your luncheon?

That's rude.

But conservatives saw Singleton's introduction as evidence of the liberal bias that they find everywhere in professional journalism, from The New York Times to CBS News and beyond.

"I'm surprised Singleton wasn't wearing an Obama button," Fox News' Bill O'Reilly said about Singleton's introduction. "I mean, come on. The president understands that most in the media will back him."

Conservative Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt wrote that Singleton sang Obama "an icky love song in which he reminisced about all their hot dates and then pledged his undying love forever." Actually, Singleton told anecdotes about Obama speaking at previous luncheons.

Not to be outdone, talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh told listeners that the AP's CEO "stood up and just lauded Obama as one of the greatest human beings ever, one of the greatest presidents ever, one of the greatest quotes ever, one of the greatest guys ever."

Clearly, the fact that Singleton is a Republican escaped these guys, as did the fact that he does things like belch out front-page, anti-union editorials. Once, he even demanded that The Denver Post editorial board reverse its unanimous decision to endorse John Kerry, insisting that the newspaper back Singleton's buddy George Bush.

Singleton ended his introduction of Obama by saying that these days "the only thing anyone seems willing to compromise on is... well, I can't think of anything."

Here's a suggestion.

Let's agree to acknowledge the facts.

When a journalist says something like, Obama saved two of the three big U.S. automakers and he came into office during the worst recession since the Great Depression, let's not cry media bias.

Let's just say, yes, those are facts, and honor them as such, so we can have an honest debate about what we truly disagree on.
