Pasta pips the rest when it comes to the world's favourite food ...

Pasta is the world?s favourite food, according to a survey by global charity Oxfam, Expat Emporium has learned.

The poll, which questioned 17 nations around the world found that the filling carbohydrate beat dishes such as meat, rice and pizza to the top spot. Meat came in second and third was rice (another rather stodgy staple).

Favourite dishes varied between countries with the Spanish voting paella their favourite, vegetables were top in Pakistan and Germany choose noodles. Australians went out on a limb and voted chocolate their favourite food ? the only nation to confess to a sweet tooth.

Many respondents ? nearly 16,500 people took part in the survey ? said they opted for pasta because it wasn?t expensive and went well with many other foods.

The survey also uncovered a few surprise results.

A spokesperson for Oxfam said: ?We learned that food prices are a common worry and that people?s diets are actually changing, with many not eating the same foods as they did just two years ago.
?In the UK, popular curry dishes only made it to number four as Britains tended to? name steak as their favourite food, followed by pasta and chicken.? The USA opted for pizza while Australians were the only country with a sweet tooth, voting chocolate as their favourite food. This actually ranked fifteenth when taken globally.?

Other analysis showed Asian food was becoming more popular world-wide. In the UK curry went down to number four in the nation?s list of favourite dishes. Meanwhile Japanese cuisine is making a big impression in countries such as America and South Africa where it entered their Top 10 favourite foods.

The actual Oxfam Top 10 ?world-wide? list is:

  • Pasta
  • Meat
  • Rice
  • Pizza
  • Chicken
  • Fish and seafood
  • Vegetables
  • Chinese
  • Italian
  • Mexican

?The search was carried out as part of Oxfam?s Grow campaign which is urging businessmen and politicians to work together to ensure everyone in the world has enough to eat.

The Oxfam spokesman added: ?The global system which is supposed to feed us all is broken, leaving one in seven people to go hungry every day and many more worried by rising prices.?

?From pizza or pasta to Kenyan ugali, food is one of our greatest pleasures and one of our most basic human rights.? We need to do something quickly to fix things and make sure that everyone has enough to eat, always.?

Interestingly, fast food showed it was losing popularity with KFC making 107th place and McDonald?s lingering behind at 113th.
