??Azucar! Celebrating Celia Cruz? will include the following events:
Performance: The Celia Cruz High School of Music?s Latin Jazz Ensemble will perform, followed by a panel discussion devoted to Celia Cruz?s early life in Cuba and Mexico and her status as a cultural icon. A tour of the Celia Cruz mausoleum will follow. The panel will include musician Bobby Sanabria, Jazz Master C?ndido Camero, vocalist Lupe O?Farrill and others. This event will be held on October 9, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Cemetery, located at Webster Avenue & East 233rd Street, Bronx, New York.
Panel: In celebration of Celia Cruz?s birthday, there will be a panel devoted to Ms. Cruz as an icon and her image in different media. The panel will include Elena Mart?nez; filmmaker Leon Gast (Celia Cruz and the Fania Allstars in Africa); Celia?s hairdresser, Ruth S?nchez; scholar Licia Fiol-Matta; and others. The panel will take place on October 20, 2011, at 6:00 pm at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education. The center is located at 928 Simpson Street, Bronx, New York.
Photography Exhibition: Also on October 20 at the Casita Maria Center, an exhibition, ?Presenting Celia Cruz? by Alexis Rodr?guez-Duarte will open. The opening will introduce the artist and his work chronicling the life and travels of the cultural icon. Refreshments will be served.
Alexis Rodr?guez-Duarte was born in Havana, Cuba. In 1968 he moved with his parents to Miami, where he was raised. At the age of ten, he was given his first camera by his grandfather, which sparked his interest in photography. Today, he is an internationally renowned photographer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Town & Country, and Harper?s Bazaar, among others. He is the author of Presenting Celia Cruz, ?a poignant and glorious tribute to a brilliant life and a legendary performer? (book cover shown here).
