Clinton School Dean Skip Rutherford will be honored by HIPPY USA, a national organization dedicated to early childhood education. Rutherford will be the guest of honor at the annual ?HIPPY Champion Event? on Oct. 21 in Little Rock.

Little Rock, AR, September 13, 2011:? A national organization with expertise in early childhood education will honor Skip Rutherford for his contributions to improving the lives of children and families, and for his dedication to excellence in the entire continuum of education. HIPPY USA will host their annual ?HIPPY Champion Event,? on October 21, where Rutherford will be the guest of honor.

Ann Kamps, 2010 co-honoree, will serve as event chair, and noted therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer will serve as honorary event chair for the organization?s major fundraiser. Mr. Rutherford is currently the Dean of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service and has been an avid supporter of HIPPY from its inception. Arkansas? then First Lady Hillary Clinton, along with husband and Governor, Bill Clinton, brought the program to Arkansas in the mid-1980s.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the Clinton Presidential Center, with special musical guests Wine and Roses. Tickets are $100. Dr. Chad Rodgers, also a 2010 honoree, along with Shanti Halter, are members of the event committee.

?The outstanding work that programs such as HIPPY provide is priceless,? shared Rutherford during a recent reception held at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service for Harlem?s Children Zone head Geoffrey Canada. ?Getting into the homes, working in partnership with parents to help close the achievement gap is critical to early childhood success in education.? HIPPY?s program model utilizes home visitors from the community to help parents become confident in being their child?s first teacher.

HIPPY is an evidence-based home visiting program that focuses on family literacy, school readiness, and parental involvement. HIPPY?s mission is to help parents prepare their preschool children for continued success in school. With its national headquarters in Little Rock, HIPPY USA supports the development and operation of programs in communities across the United States through ongoing program development and technical assistance informed by research and public policy.

All funds raised from the event will be used to provide support, training, and technical assistance to more than 140 programs serving 16,000 children across the United States. This includes 5,700 Arkansas children and families.

The HIPPY program was developed in Israel in 1969 as a research and demonstration project at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem to provide children from at-risk families with high quality preschool education and family involvement services. HIPPY was brought to the United States in 1984 in response to the specific needs for quality, effective early education, and family support models.? The HIPPY model has been replicated throughout the United States and around the world.? It is currently implemented in Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, and is currently being piloted in Argentina, Denmark, and Switzerland.
