Brown adipose tissue has beneficial effects on metabolism and glucose tolerance

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Joslin Diabetes Center scientists have demonstrated that brown adipose tissue (BAT) has beneficial effects on glucose tolerance, body weight and metabolism. The findings, which may lead to new treatments for diabetes, appear in the upcoming issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Unlike the more prevalent white adipose tissue (WAT or white fat) which stores fat, BAT (or brown fat) burns fat to produce heat. Studies in mice and humans have suggested that BAT also plays a role in regulating body weight and metabolism. This has made BAT the focus of considerable interest among scientists and pharmaceutical companies who are investigating ways to use BAT as a treatment for obesity.

The Joslin researchers were interested in learning whether BAT is involved in glucose metabolism and uncovering the mechanisms underlying BAT's effects on metabolism and body weight. The study involved the transplantation of BAT from male donor mice into the visceral cavities of mice which were fed a standard or high-fat diet.

By eight to twelve weeks following transplantation, the BAT-transplanted mice fed a normal diet showed improved glucose tolerance, increased insulin sensitivity, lower body weights and decreased fat mass. Three control groups, which had a WAT transplant, a glass bead implant or surgery without transplantation, did not show any metabolic improvements. "We were able to establish that BAT transplantation affects metabolism. This study provides further evidence that BAT is a very important metabolic organ and a potential treatment for obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance," says lead author Kristin I. Stanford, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Section on Integrative Physiology and Metabolism.

The mice fed a high-fat diet also exhibited beneficial effects from BAT transplantation, including improved glucose metabolism, decreased body weight and a complete reversal of insulin resistance resulting from excess fat consumption. Previous studies of BAT transplantation in mice, which transplanted BAT in a different location and had a shorter duration, did not show beneficial effects.

The transplanted BAT affected metabolism throughout the body by increasing levels of circulating Interleukin-6 (IL-6). The researchers also found that BAT transplantation increased norepinephrine and FGF-21. IL-6 has been shown in previous studies to increase energy production and decrease body weight. When the researchers transplanted BAT from donor mice genetically engineered not to produce IL-6, the mice who received the transplants showed no metabolic improvements. "This is the first study to demonstrate that an increase in BAT significantly increases levels of circulating IL-6. It suggests that an increase in BAT-derived IL-6 improves glucose metabolism throughout the body," says senior author Laurie J. Goodyear, PhD, head of the Section on Integrative Physiology and Metabolism.

The researchers are following up on the study by "looking into other ways BAT may have beneficial metabolic effects and further investigating the functions of IL-6 and other BAT-derived hormones," says Dr. Goodyear. Dr. Stanford is studying the relationship between BAT and type 1 diabetes (T1D), based on data from a collaborator that suggests that BAT may help control glucose in T1D.

Dr. Goodyear and the research team are very interested in using their findings to develop new therapies for diabetes. "We hope that manipulating BAT will help people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes," says Dr. Goodyear.

Best bets: 'Hobbit' heads back to Middle-Earth

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

It's here: The first of three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" lands in theaters this week. If you're not interested in returning to Middle-Earth, there's a fun kids' movie on home video and an engrossing Beatles documentary on PBS.

TUESDAY: 'Ice Age: Continental Drift'
Pirates, wooly mammoths, and more, oh my. The fourth "Ice Age" movie is no "Toy Story," but it's still a fun romp for kids who love the prehistoric beasts. In this one, Manny the mammoth gets separated from his wife and daughter as the continents do their infamous crack-up. Thankfully, he's surrounded by pals, including Sid the sloth and Diego the saber-toothed tiger, as he tries to reunite with his family. Oh, and Scrat the saber-toothed squirrel is still hunting that acorn. (On home video Dec. 11.)

FRIDAY: 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'
If you named your son Thorin, have a wedding-ring inscription done in Elvish, or flunked out of college because you spent so many hours hand-painting your D&D orc character, you've been looking forward to this one for a while now. Peter Jackson has returned to Middle-Earth with the first of three films from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit." Three films made more sense with the "Lord of the Rings," which was a three-volume work anyway -- but breaking Bilbo Baggins' journey into three films means more hours to savor for fans, more money for the studios. In "Unexpected Journey," unassuming Hobbit Bilbo gets recruited for the journey of a lifetime and sets off on his hairy feet, with plenty of familiar characters (Gandalf, yay! Gollum, yuck!) to see him through. (Opens Dec. 14.)

FRIDAY: "Magical Mystery Tour Revisited'
Roll up, and that's an invitation! The Beatles' 1967 film, "Magical Mystery Tour," perplexed many of even the band's most devoted fans. Surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were among those who were interviewed for this look at the controversial and surreal film that many Beatlemaniacs have still never seen. After "Revisited" airs on "Great Performances," a fully restored version of the film itself will be shown. (Dec. 14, 9 p.m., PBS.)

EU leaders accept Peace Prize in anti-EU bastion

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? European Union leaders arriving in Norway to receive the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize said the 27-nation bloc needs more integration and authority to solve problems, including the worst financial crisis afflicting it since the union was formed.

Conceding that the EU lacked sufficient powers to stop the Bosnia war in the 1990s, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Sunday that the absence of such authority at the time is "one of the most powerful arguments for a stronger European Union."

Barroso was speaking to reporters with EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy and the president of the EU Parliament, Martin Schulz in Oslo, where the three leaders were to receive this year's award, granted to the European Union for fostering peace on a continent ravaged by war.

Nobel committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland will hand over the prize, worth $1.2 million, during a ceremony at Oslo City Hall, followed by a banquet at the Grand Hotel, against a backdrop of demonstrations in this EU-skeptic country that has twice rejected joining the EU.

About 20 European government leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, will be joining the celebrations.

The decision to award the prize to the EU has sparked harsh criticism, including from three peace laureates ? South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland and Adolfo Perez Esquivel from Argentina ? who have demanded the prize money not be paid out this year. They say the bloc contradicts the values associated with the prize because it relies on military force to ensure security.

The EU is being granted the prize as it grapples with a debt crisis that has stirred deep tensions between north and south, caused soaring unemployment and sent hundreds of thousands into the streets to protest austerity measures.

It is also threatening the euro ? the common currency used by 17 of its members ? and even the structure of the union itself, and is fueling extremist movements such as Golden Dawn in Greece, which opponents brand as neo-Nazi.

Barroso acknowledged that the current crisis showed the union was "not fully equipped to deal with a crisis of this magnitude."

"We do not have all the instruments for a true and genuine economic union ... so we need to complete our economic and monetary union," he said, adding that the new measures, including on a banking and fiscal union, would be agreed on in coming weeks.

He stressed that despite the crisis all steps taken had been toward "more, not less integration."

Van Rompuy was optimistic saying that EU would come out of the crisis stronger than before. "We want Europe to become again a symbol of hope," he said.

Steelers?fall in Big Ben's comeback, lose to Chargers

Rivers throws three TDs to lead San Diego to 34-24 win

Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers reacts after throwing an interception against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

updated 5:26 p.m. ET Dec. 9, 2012

PITTSBURGH - Ben Roethlisberger's sprained right shoulder appears to be OK. It's everything else about the Pittsburgh Steelers that could use some work, as the San Diego Chargers showed Sunday.

Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes, two to Danario Alexander, and the Chargers beat the Steelers 34-24.

The win was San Diego's first in 15 regular-season visits to Pittsburgh and snapped a four-game losing streak. The Chargers (5-8) dominated from the outset, never letting Roethlisberger get comfortable in his first game in nearly a month.

Roethlisberger completed 22 of 42 passes for 285 yards and three second-half touchdowns. But he also threw an interception and had a botched screen pass turn into an easy San Diego score as Pittsburgh (7-6) hardly played like a team readying for a postseason run.

The Chargers have been one of the NFL's biggest disappointments after a 3-1 start evaporated into a 1-7 slide that fueled speculation coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith could be fired at season's end.

Maybe, but for an afternoon, anyway, the Chargers played with a focus lacking for much of this season. The injury-ravaged offensive line kept Rivers out of harm's way and helped him convert 12 of 22 third downs, allowing San Diego to chew up the clock and keep Roethlisberger from getting going while the game was still competitive.

It wasn't exactly the triumphant return the Steelers were expecting from their franchise quarterback. Pittsburgh hoped Roethlisberger's comeback combined with last week's emotional win at Baltimore would serve as fuel for another December push.

Instead, the previously inept Chargers pushed back.

San Diego took a 13-3 lead during an ugly first half that made it difficult to tell which team was trying to get back into the postseason and which was simply playing out the season.

Roethlisberger, less than a month removed a punishing hit against Kansas City that nearly sent one of his ribs into his aorta, struggled getting loose. His second pass stuck in his hand and ended up spiking into the ground. His third short-hopped an open Mike Wallace.

Things never got better. The running game got no traction - Roethlisberger actually led the Steelers in rushing in the first half - and Pittsburgh's receivers did little to help their rusty quarterback.

Wallace let a 50-yard pass that would have gotten Pittsburgh out of an early hole bounce harmlessly off his fingertips. Brown followed suit on Pittsburgh's next drive, a 30-yard bullet thudding off his chest.

It led to a familiar pattern. The Steelers got pinned deep in their territory, sputtered out in a handful of plays, giving San Diego the ball near midfield.

Eventually, the Chargers took advantage. Playing conservatively while trying to protect Rivers behind that patchwork offensive line, San Diego got going late in the half.

Rivers hit a wide-open Alexander on a 39-yard touchdown pass and Nick Novak added a 39-yard field goal to make it 13-0.

Pittsburgh briefly rallied, getting across midfield for the first time during a last-second drive. Shaun Suisham made a 49-yard field goal at the halftime gun.

Any boost for the Steelers disappeared during the first 10 minutes of the third quarter.

San Diego converted five straight third downs during a clock-chewing, momentum-sapping drive, the final conversion on a 3-yard pass from Rivers to Floyd to make it 20-3.

The 17-play march ate up nearly 10 minutes. And San Diego needed barely 10 seconds to put the game away.

Backed up yet again, Roethlisberger tried to hit Brown on a screen pass. It caromed off tight end David Paulson's rear and rolled into the end zone, where Quentin Jammer fell on it.

The play appeared to be overturned on review. Pittsburgh's offense ran back onto the field when referee Scott Green popped out from under the hood.

Instead, Green pulled a switcheroo, confirming the score to give the Chargers a 27-3 lead and a brief moment of joy in a year full of chaos.

Memorable Entertaining with Harry & David's Smoked Chardonnay ...

There?s entertaining for the holidays, and then there?s confident entertaining for the holidays.

I?ll take ?confident? any day! I want my guests to walk away from our home and remember the night, and I want to feel good about the food I served!

With the occasional stress of the season we?re in, one way to accomplish this is with Harry & David?s easy entertaining food items.

The word ?easy? always captures my attention, because it means less time in the kitchen, and more time to enjoy the season at hand with my guests!

It also takes the pressure off of myself, knowing that most people love a home-cooked meal. In our fast-paced world today, we just want real food.

So I?m sharing about 2 amazing food items from Harry & David that I recently cooked for my family when we went to Bend, Oregon a few weeks ago, as our friends let us use their home. I wanted to see how easy the cooking process really was with these 2 items, if I felt ?confident? about the process, and I wanted to feel, on the receiving end, what it felt like to get high quality food items in the mail as a gift. (Both items were mailed to my home, precooked).

These two items will make your holiday entertaining a cinch, plus provide incredible pizazz and flavor for your meal: Harry & David?s Smoked Chardonnay Turkey and Lobster Risotto.

Planning ahead to host or to give:

Planning ahead for holiday entertaining is KEY, either by planning your menu and hosting in your home, or by sending a beautiful gift to others to enjoy in their home.

-Send a gift of food
You want to SEND the perfect gift to a family, client, or a friend? Both of these items are so classy, so easy to prepare, you can create beautiful memories from afar, without even being there.

-Give a gift of food
To me, one of the best gifts I can GIVE to others is to invite them into our home for a meal. But during the holidays, we can be soooo busy, that we just say no. Both of these delicious items today are so easy to pop in the oven and bake, while you?re setting the table and whipping up a fresh salad. Ask your guests to bring the wine or drinks and you?re set!

How to host an elegant holiday dinner party:

1. Set the dinner party date.
2. Invite the guests, getting an RSVP on the number of people who will attend.
3. Plan your menu; order the turkey and side dish (your guests will never forget the Lobster Risotto).
4. Set the table. Add in a little ?holiday.?
5. Set the tone. Holiday entertaining is simple because the tree is already lighting up the room, creating a beautiful ambience. Turn on the Bose Wireless speaker (a compact-sized speaker that you hook up to your iPad; you can move it from room to room) for incredible holiday sound. Decide on the kind of music you want to play. Pandora is your friend ? do you want Christmasy jazz, classical, pop.
6. Engage with your guests. Learn more about them. Talk less about yourselves.

Smoked Chardonnay Turkey
The turkey will come in the mail with a nice gift card. I love that personal touch that Harry & David offers (if you?re sending it as a gift).

It?s infused with chardonnay and generously rubbed with herbs, and has a smoked flavor which is amazing and unique. The bird is pre-cooked, which means you?ll just pop it in the oven.

Place it in the fridge until the day of the dinner party. Follow the directions by opening up the bag and placing the turkey in a roasting pan. Bake according to instructions.

Slice and serve.

It?s really that easy!

Lobster Risotto
The lobster risotto is a ?stand out? dish. It will also come in the mail. Place it in your freezer until the day of your dinner party.

Follow directions, but basically you heat in the oven for 30 minutes before serving. So easy!

This dish makes for an impressive entr?e or a side dish. It?s rich, but with the sweet Maine lobster, creamy risotto, crimini mushrooms, Swiss cheese, lemon herb butter and panko bread crumbs, the flavor is unreal.

I served it at this dinner party this summer, and our guests couldn?t stop talking about it. I know it?s spendy, but what a great idea to keep a couple of these in the freezer for ?last minute entertaining? for special occasions.

I love the idea for Valentine?s Day, too! Or, as I talked about above, the perfect give to give.

Enjoy entertaining
A leisurely meal centered on real food and good conversation is one of the best gifts you can give.

I?d recommend these 2 items for any hostess (reluctant or not) for the holiday season ahead. You have plenty of time to order one or both, store the turkey in your fridge and place the risotto in the freezer, both until entertaining day.

As I served these 2 items to our family, I also felt ?confident? that the food was going to be delicious. It made me more relaxed as a hostess, and to be honest, excited for the meal.

I couldn?t wait to taste the flavors myself!

Enjoy giving
Hosting a dinner party in your home, or sending the gift of real food to your loved ones, friends or clients in another region, says that you really value them.

Because real food is a gift of substance, nourishment and love.

Have you ever sent a ?food? gift to a loved one, friend, or client?
Have you ever considered using a specialty food item at a dinner party?

I was paid to review these products from Harry & David; but as always, all opinions are my own.

How to Choose the Right Keywords for SEO

The most important part of building or optimizing a website is the selection of the right keywords for SEO.? If you do not identify and target the right keywords, everything else you do will be in vain.? Target the right keywords and your website will be a success.? The right people will search for and find the information relevant to them.? Target the wrong keywords and you?ll miss out on the critical website traffic you need to stay competitive.

How To Choose Right Keywords for SEO

Importance of Keywords

Without choosing the right keywords, the theme of your website will not be focused.? As a result, your website will not rank high on search engines.? Take some time to identify the keywords that describe your business, offering, or audience.

If you incorporate the right keywords throughout your website you ensure your content stays on track.? This will greatly increase your chances of gaining high positions on Google for search phrases that will generate traffic to your website.

To get started, ask yourself, ?What would someone type into Google if they were looking for what I offer??

Now let?s refine this a bit?

Never Use Single-Word Keywords

A common misconception among beginners is that they identify and target only a single word as their ?keyword?.? This is entirely wrong, and if you make this mistake, you will be disappointed with your search engine rankings.? To get top placements for a single-word keyword (other than your business name) is virtually impossible.? Let?s flesh out this concept a little bit more.

Say you are a Real Estate attorney who has just published a Do-It-Yourself Real Estate Law Guide for Tenants.? You would like to build a website to sell this book online so you come up with a few options for the keywords you?d like to target, including:

  1. Book
  2. Real Estate Book
  3. Real Estate Law Book
  4. Do It Yourself Real Estate Law Book for Tenants

The difference between these four options is obvious.? They become increasingly more descriptive and relevant to the people you are selling to.? Targeting the keyword ?Book? would be impossible to rank high for.? Why?? Because it is so vague that the competition is staggering.? Literally ? you would be competing with every other book for sale on the internet.? As you move down the list, you become increasingly more specific.? As that happens, the number of people you are competing with goes down and your chances to rank high go up.

Optimizing for multiple-word keywords has many benefits compared with using single-word keywords, including:

  • Less competition for your search phrase
  • More relevant visitor traffic
  • Better chances of ranking high

Even though the single-word keyword ?Book? might get millions more searches each month compared to the keyword ?Do It Yourself Real Estate Law Book for Tenants?, that difference in traffic is irrelevant.? Nearly everyone searching the term ?Book? is not looking for your specific offering, so it doesn?t matter anyways.? In contrast, virtually ALL the people searching with the keyword ?Do It Yourself Real Estate Law Book for Tenants? are looking for your exact offering.? There is no benefit to simply grabbing tons of traffic.? The traffic must be relevant to be useful.

ProTip:? It is important to note that many professionals in the SEO field use the term ?keyword phrase? synonymously with the term ?multiple-word keyword?.

Creating a Keyword Portfolio

Think of a number of different keywords to make up your keyword portfolio.? First, you want to come up with the ?head keyword?, which will be the keyword that is the most competitive and hardest to rank high for.? It is the primary, main keyword that describes the theme of your website.? The head keyword is between 2-4 words in length.? In the example above, a couple of options for the Head Keyword could be:

  • Real Estate Law Guide
  • Real Estate Law Book
  • Tenant Law Book
  • Tenant Law Guide
  • Real Estate Legal Book

Write these options down and file them away for now.? Next, you want to come up with a dozen or so ?long tail keywords?.? A long tail keyword is one that is more than 3-4 keywords in length and relevant to a highly specific search phrase.? A few examples could be:

  • Legal advice for tenants in PA
  • Book on legal responsibilities for tenants
  • Landlord tenant disputes guide book
  • Guide to Real Estate Law for Tenants
  • Do It Yourself Book on Real Estate Law

The main benefit of using long tail keywords in your keyword strategy is that they are much easier to rank initially high for.? If you have a new website then starting with some long tail keywords is the best place to begin.? You won?t get large amounts of traffic, but the traffic you do get will be highly relevant and more likely to convert.

Research to Find the Right Keywords

So by now you have a couple of ideas for your head keyword and a number of possible long tail keywords in mind.? To decide which ones you will use, go to the Google Keyword Tool.? It is a free keyword research tool that is a part of the Google AdWords service.

Put in a number of your keyword possibilities into the ?Word or Phrase? area.? Make sure to click ?Only show ideas closely related to my search terms? and click Search.? In the image below, we follow the example by placing ?real estate law book?, ?tenant law book?, etc. into the search field.

How To Choose Right Keywords for SEO 1

The Google Keyword Tool will then display a report of the keywords, including:

  • Competition
  • Global Monthly Searches
  • Local Monthly Searches
  • Ideas for new keywords

How To Choose Right Keywords for SEO 2As you can see, the keyword ?real estate law book? has high competition and high traffic.? You?ll probably want to make this your head keyword.? The other possibilities, ?tenant law book?, ?tenant law guide?, and ?real estate legal book?, do not have enough traffic to justify reporting (signified by the ?-? in the data grid).? This is not to say that no one searches for this, and in fact, people surely do, they are just not popular enough keywords for data to be tracked by Google.? You will probably want to target these keywords as well in sub areas of your site such as internal pages or blog posts.

Repeat this keyword research process for all of your long tail keyword possibilities as well.? Find ones that have low competition and high traffic.? Since long tail keywords are so specific, they may go unreported.? Even so, you will want to go ahead and use at least some of them anyways (in the title of a blog post for instance) simply because of the extremely high relevance they embody.? For example, ?Do It Yourself Real Estate Law Book? might be a good title for an internal page of your website because it is just too relevant and targeted to pass up.

Choosing the right keywords involves research, brain storming, and some gut instinct.? Take some time to think this through as it?s the most important part of your internet marketing campaign.
