Skulls of the Shogun offers game syncing across Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox (video)

Skulls of the Shogun brings true game sync across Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox video

Cross-platform game compatibility and syncing aren't anything new, but there have been few if any games that truly make us feel at home when we switch devices. Developer 17-Bit's just-launched Skulls of the Shogun bucks that trend in style as the first game with a unified experience across every one of Microsoft's platforms. Start a game on a Windows 8 or RT PC, Windows Phone or Xbox 360, and cloud saves will carry over with nary a hitch in sight. Turn-based multiplayer works the same way: anyone involved in a match can play from whichever device is convenient, rather than give up a big screen or mobility. We just wish the undead strategy game's prices enjoyed the same level of consistency -- Skulls costs $5 on Windows Phone, $10 on Windows PCs and 1,200 points on the Xbox. Still, we'll bite if it means squeezing in one more round on our Surface.

Giant Carbon Molecules for Sustainable Technologies

Jan. 31, 2013 ? Scientists in the joint research project "FUNgraphen" are pinning their hopes for new technologies on a particular form of carbon: They have developed new carbon macromolecules and molecular carbon composite materials with special properties. The molecules are derived from graphene, a substance that consists of individual layers of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb-like pattern. The process previously necessary to make use of this substance was complex and expensive and thus of little value for most plastics applications.

A research group at the Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF) of the University of Freiburg led by the chemist Prof. Dr. Rolf M?lhaupt, managing director of the FMF, has now succeeded in combining graphene with polymers, making them fit for plastics applications, and preparing them for material optimization on a kilogram scale. The project "FUNgraphen," funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is being coordinated at the FMF with support from an industrial advisory board. The other project partners besides the FMF are the University of Bayreuth, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials in Freiburg.

In the FMF processes individual layers of carbon atoms, derived from natural graphite and also renewable carbon sources, are physically and chemically attached to polymers. The result is giant molecules of carbon, so-called macromolecules, which are less than a millionth of a millimeter thick but can achieve widths of more than a hundredth of a millimeter. The resulting carbon macromolecules and carbon polymer hybrid materials are light, durable, environmentally friendly, and electrically conductive. Moreover, they are resistant to heat, chemicals, and radiation and are impermeable to gas and liquids. "They have the potential to vastly improve resource and energy efficiency of plastics," says M?lhaupt.

In addition, the researchers dispersed several of these large carbon molecules in water, nontoxic solutions, and plastics to produce concentrated stable dispersions without requiring either binders or dispersing aids. These mixtures can be used to coat surfaces and print conductive carbon films as well as electrically conducting micro patterns. In this way, carbon can replace expensive transition metals like palladium or indium. "The applications range from printed electronics to printed catalysts with a pore design for the production of fine chemicals with simple catalyst recovery," says M?lhaupt. The printed conductive carbon layers are much more mechanically robust than printed indium tin oxide layers. The scientists at the FMF also succeeded in mechanically reinforcing plastics and rubber with carbon macromolecules and simultaneously making them electrically conductive, resistant to radiation, and more gas-tight. These substances are interesting candidates for application in antistatic and impermeable fuel tanks and fuel lines, casings that are shielded against electromagnetic interferences, and gas-tight automobile tires for reducing fuel consumption in transportation.

Examples from the project partners' research also show that carbon macromolecules are far more versatile than the carbon nanoparticles typically used today, thus opening up new potential for the development of sustainable materials and technologies. Prof. Dr. Volker Altst?dt from the "FUNgraphen" team at the University of Bayreuth was able to substantially reduce the cell sizes in foams by adding carbon macromolecules. This will allow the researchers to improve the thermal insulation properties of foams and develop new, highly efficient insulating material. The "FUNgraphen" group led by Dr. Bernhard Schartel at the BAM has succeeded in increasing the fire protection effect of halogen-free flame retardants by adding tiny admixtures of the new carbon macromolecules. A plastic equipped with this new material does not catch fire even after a flame has been applied to it several times -- unlike unprotected plastics, which become deformed at high temperatures and start to burn immediately when they come into contact with fire.

STI Rate Higher Among Military Women Than Civilian Women ...

The rate of STIs among military women is higher than that in civilian women, according to a recent study in the Journal of Women's Health.

The study, conducted by researchers at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, shows that the STI rate is seven times higher among military women than civilian women.

The researchers also found that only about one in three unmarried military women who are sexually active used a condom during the last time they had sexual intercourse, and that nearly two in three of them had more than one sexual partner over the last year.

The findings are based on reviewing past research on STI rates among military members.

"These high-risk sexual practices likely contribute to chlamydia infection rates that are higher than the rates in the U.S. general population," the researchers wrote in the study.

"To address the reproductive health needs of military women, investigations into the prevalence of unsafe sexual behaviors and consequent infection among older servicewomen and women veterans are needed," they wrote. "Direct comparison of military and civilian women is needed to determine if servicewomen are a truly high-risk group."

According to the latest data on STIs in the United States, there were about 1.4 million cases of chlamydia, nearly 322,000 casse of gonorrhea, and 13,970 non-congenital cases of syphilis reported in the U.S. in 2011. Young people and gay and bisexual men are at the highest risk for STIs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Rio Grande do Sul state forensics department raised the death toll Tuesday from 231 to 234 to account for three victims who did not appear on the original list of the dead. Authorities say more than 120 people remain hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns, with dozens of them in critical condition, after the Sunday nightclub fire. (AP Photo/Felipe Dana)

A makeshift memorial that include pictures of the victims of the Kiss nightclub fatal fire is seen inside the gymnasium where a collective funeral was held a day earlier, in Santa Maria, Brazil, Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013. A fast-moving fire roared through the crowded, windowless nightclub, early Sunday, killing more than 230 people. The first funeral services were held Monday for the victims. Most of the dead were college students 18 to 21 years old, but they also included some minors. Almost all died from smoke inhalation. (AP Photo/Felipe Dana)

(AP) ? Flammable and toxic foam soundproofing on the ceiling. Just one exit for a large club that could hold hundreds of people. Not a ceiling water sprinkler system in sight.

These are some of the main causes of the massive death toll in a nightclub fire in Brazil ? and none broke any law, raising questions about safety regulations in a nation set to host the World Cup and Olympic Games.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press, including past building and fire safety plan permits issued to the Kiss club, where 234 people died within minutes in a fire early Sunday, showed that such deadly choices were within regulations.

"Do I agree with the fact that there was only one exit? No. Do I agree that the roof was covered with flammable material? No, I don't," said Maj. Gerson Pereira, an inspector with the local fire department. "I would have liked to shut down this place, but then the firefighters could be sued" because no law had been broken.

But the same documents also illustrate that other regulations were broken, including irregularities in the fire safety inspection of the club, as well as violations by the band the club hired whose pyrotechnics are blamed for causing the blaze. Police inspectors say any of these violations were reason enough to shut the club down.

One document shows that the club had already been labeled by fire officials as being at "medium" risk for having a fire. By state law, that designation requires that the club undergo annual inspections. But records show that the last inspection took place in August 2011.

Survivors of the fire have said that the club's fire extinguishers failed to work in early attempts to battle the blaze. Under state law, an extinguisher must have a receipt showing that it had been independently inspected within a year in order for it to be acceptable.

Marcelo Arigony, the lead police investigator in the case, said in a Tuesday press conference that it was clear the fire extinguishers had not been inspected and that they were clearly cheap models that should not be used anywhere.

Perhaps most egregious was what authorities point to as the cause of the fire.

The blaze began at around 2:30 a.m. local time during a performance by Gurizada Fandangueira, a country music band that had made the use of pyrotechnics a trademark of their shows. The band's guitarist told media that the 615-square-meter (6,650-square-foot) club was packed with an estimated 1,200 to 1,300 people, the same estimate police have given. Capacity for the club, however, is under 700.

Police said that members of the band knowingly bought flares meant for outdoor use because they cost a mere $1.25 a piece, compared with the $35 price tag for an indoor flare.

"It's not that this club was working to come within this or that law ? the place should have never been open in the first place," Arigony said. "This is a problem that is seen across Brazil, these laws. I can only hope this tragedy brings about change."

Jaime Moncada, a U.S.-based fire-safety consultant with nearly three decades experience in Latin America including large projects in Brazil, said he was not surprised that one exit was permissible under local law.

Shown a blueprint of the club obtained by the AP, he calculated that the farthest point from the front door was 105 feet (32 meters), and regulations in most Brazilian states dictate that a second exit is required only if the distance is 131 feet (40 meters) or more.

For the same reason of distance, Moncada said sprinklers and alarms would not be required.

"For an American audience, it is crazy to think that a place would have only one exit," he said.

In Brazil, he added, that would be the norm.

In the United States, the club would have failed an inspection in at least three ways, according to Moncada: Three separate exits would have been required; the foam would need to be treated with a fire retardant; and it would need sprinklers.

Amid the shock of what was the world's deadliest nightclub fire in a decade, changes in Brazil seemed on the horizon.

In Brasilia, the nation's capital, lawmakers in the lower house worked on a proposal that would require federal safety minimum standards across Brazil. Now states individually create such laws. The O Globo newspaper reported on its website that the mayor's office in Santa Maria ordered all nightclubs closed for 30 days while inspections are carried out.

Elsewhere, the government of the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo, set to host the opening match of the 2014 World Cup, promised tougher security regulations for nightclubs.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper reported that in Manaus, which will also host World Cup matches, nightclubs with empty fire extinguishers and unmarked emergency exits have been shut down and fined. And in Olympic host city, Rio de Janeiro, a consumer complaint hotline has received more than 60 calls since Sunday's tragedy denouncing hazardous conditions at night spots, theaters, supermarkets, schools, hospitals and shopping malls.

Outraged citizens in Santa Maria are demanding change.

Elise Parode, an 18-year-old student taking part in a protest before City Hall, chanted with all her might along with about 500 others, pushing up against the door of the building as municipal guards kept them from entering.

"We want justice! We want the government held accountable, just like the owners of the bar!" she yelled as the crowd around held aloft poster-size photos of the fire's victims. "Our own government doesn't know the laws ? we're not safe until they do."

Green Tea and Viagra: A Recipe for Fighting Cancer?

Discovered: Erectile dysfunction meds and green tea team up to fight cancer; cell phone towers are responsible for many bird deaths; look at this tractor beam in action; shooting your belly full of botox won't make you skinny.

The cancer-fighting properties of green tea and erectile dysfunction meds. Ever wonder why men who drink green tea and have Viagra prescriptions live so long? Of course you didn't, nobody wonders that. But according to a new study led by Kyushu University's Hirofumi Tachibana, it could be true! He gave mice suffering from cancer a cocktail of green tea and PDE5 inhibitors (the kind of drug in Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and other brands of erectile dysfunction medication), finding that malignant cells stopped growing when subjects took the healthy/arousing mixture. The EGCG catechin found in green tea has long been thought to have cancer fighting properties, but Tachibana's work shows that the PDE5 enzyme could be stifling it. Luckily, we already have a drug that suppresses PDE5, and it just happens to be used for erectile dysfunction. Tachibana warns the public from trying this remedy at home right now, and in the meantime researchers in the U.S. plan to set up human trials this year.?[The Japan Times]

Cell phone towers are killing many birds. The verdict's out on cell phones' link with brain cancer, but it's very clear cell phones are having a negative effect on bird populations. Around 7 million birds have been killed each year by flying into cell towers, according to a new paper in Biological Conservation. And many of them are rare species, such as the yellow rail (2,000 die from cell phone tower collisions each year, and there are only about 20,000 total). Researchers suggest that affixing blinking red lights to the towers could lower deaths by 70 percent. [Scientific American]

No, injecting botox into your belly won't make you skinny. It might iron out the wrinkles in your stomach skin, but injecting Botox into your belly won't slim you down according to a new study from the Mayo Clinic. Data on this was split previously, with some researchers saying that botulinum toxin A injections could reduce waistline fat by delaying emptying of the stomach. This would induce a great feeling of fullness and discourage?overeating, the thought went. But the Mayo Clinic's Mark Topazian and his colleagues found no evidence that the injections corresponded with weight loss. ""On the basis of our findings, I would not recommend gastric Botox injections to people who want to lose weight. There are some risks with this treatment and we found that there was no benefit in terms of body weight loss," Topazian says. "Unless future studies show different results I'd advise patients to seek other means of achieving weight loss."?[American Gastroenterological?Association]

Tiny Feathered Dinosaur Discovered

Researchers have discovered a new species of feathered but flightless little dinosaur from the Jurassic period.

Remains of the tiny beast, dubbed Eosinopteryx brevipenna, found in northeastern China suggest it was slightly less than a foot long (30 centimeters) and had a short snout and a short tail. Based on the dinosaur's small wingspan and bone structure, researchers believe it would have been able to run around quite easily, but likely couldn't whip up enough of a wing-beat to fly. The dinosaur also sported toes that would have been suitable for walking along the ground, the researchers added.

This birdlike dinosaur's plumage was much more reduced compared with the feathers on some of its contemporaries, which suggests that feathering was already diversified by the Late Jurassic, adapted to different ecological niches and purposes, the researchers said. (The Jurassic period lasted from about 199.6 million to 145.5 million years ago.)

"This discovery sheds further doubt on the theory that the famous fossil Archaeopteryx ? or 'first bird' as it is sometimes referred to ? was pivotal in the evolution of modern birds," researcher Gareth Dyke, a senior lecturer in paleontology at the U.K.'s University of Southampton, said in a statement.

"Our findings suggest that the origin of flight was much more complex than previously thought."

Archaeopteryx was long thought by many to have been the earliest bird. Discovered in 1860 in Germany, it is sometimes referred to as Urvogel, the German word for "original bird" or "first bird." But recent findings suggest late-stage Jurassic Archaeopteryx was actually just a relative of the lineage that ultimately gave rise to birds.

The new research was detailed in the Jan. 22 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

Brazil nightclub fire recalls a 2003 tragedy in Rhode Island

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Brazilian nightclub fire that killed more than 200 people on Sunday recalled a similar tragedy a decade ago in Rhode Island, where 100 people died when a nightclub's highly flammable insulation was ignited during a rock band's pyrotechnics show.

In both cases, police investigators cited the use of indoor pyrotechnics, sound insulation catching fire, blocked exits and potential overcrowding.

"We appear to have very short memories," said John Barylick, author of "Killer Show," a book about the Rhode Island fire, and a lead attorney representing victims in that case. "This is exactly the perfect storm that we had at the Station nightclub 10 years ago."

Police say the blaze at the Boate Kiss club in Santa Maria, in southern Brazil, spread within seconds after a flare ignited during a pyrotechnics performance appeared to set the ceiling on fire.

Many of the estimated 500 people inside were unable to find exits as dark smoke filled the large room, and at least one exit was blocked, police said.

The tragedy at the Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island came during a performance of the band Great White and was the deadliest rock concert in U.S. history. It led to sweeping changes in fire safety rules, and heavy penalties for those held accountable.

On that night in 2003, the small wooden club became engulfed in flames and many in the over-capacity crowd of 458 people were fatally trapped. Aside from the 100 people killed, some 200 were injured in the inferno.

The band's tour manager and two men who owned the nightclub pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in 2006. And in 2009, hundreds of survivors and victims' relatives reached a $176 million settlement with some 50 defendants held responsible.

The state of Rhode Island, meanwhile, tightened its fire codes, requiring sprinkler systems in places of public assembly, and made it a requirement that nightclub employees be trained in fire safety. Club owners banned indoor fireworks at concerts.

This fall, the owner of the land where the Station club once stood donated the site for a memorial to the victims.

The disaster in Brazil also rekindled memories of a 2004 blaze at the Cromagnon Club in Buenos Aires that killed 200. In that incident, a concert-goer ignited a flare.

Following the Argentine fire, Buenos Aires set up a new inspection agency in an effort to restore the credibility of health and safety monitoring at music venues and nightclubs in the capital. But critics say corruption is rife and that much remains to be done.

Barylick's advice for nighclub patrons is to be vigilant.

"No matter what the venue does I think the takeaway from this is, we are our own best fire marshals and we can't depend on others," he said.

"Most important, when you get to your seat, before you do anything else, find your nearest exit, and it probably won't be the one you came in by. That's the best you can do," Barylick said.

The Art of Documentary Photography -Art Highlights for 1/10/13 ? 1 ...

Wanted: Documentary Photographer.? Person highly skilled with camera, an artful storyteller through non-verbal and unwritten communication with the ability to work around uncomfortable, unusual, and/or unpleasant places, events, and people.? If you are looking for immediate gratification or public validation, this is not the job for you.

Like other areas of photography, having the skills to take effective images is imperative.? Like a landscape photographer, the documentary photographer must understand the technical stuff (how the camera works, lighting, composition, editing), but they also need to understand story-development.

Taking an amazing (and saleable) photo of Mt. Hood, that doesn?t look like every other photo of Mt. Hood is not an easy task ? it may take hours, even days to get the shot.?? If it?s exceptional, it might be printed, matted, and framed.? With any luck, the exceptional Mt. Hood image will be juried into a show or accepted by a gallery ? where it will be dusted often, and eventually (hopefully) sold.

However, the documentary photographer may spend days, months, or years planning, researching, and developing a story.? They bring us to places outside of our realm of daily living; through their lens they link us to unknown, uncommon, and sometimes unpleasant realities with images that capture a period of history, showing faces of humanity and inhumanity.

Often the impact is not captured in a single image, but a body of work, and the subject matter is often not what most would be eager to have adorning the walls of their homes.?? Documentary photographers provide us with images that are objective, honest, and informative that tells stories of where we?ve come from and help shape where we will go ? often bringing awareness to social issues that can be the catalyst of change.

In July 2011, Phil Decker brought his vision of a collaborative group of Salem documentary photographers together as the Salem Photo League ? which form after collaboration on the ?Faces of Salem? diversity exhibit sponsored by the Salem Multicultural Institute.? The group describes itself as ?a collective of local documentary photographers, professional and non-professional, who shed light on local issues, and who support individuals engaged in documentary projects.??? Their first collective project was ?Focus on Salem,? a series of street exhibits which ran on First Wednesdays, March thru September 2012, on vacant storefronts in the core of downtown.

The group displayed photo essays raising awareness on a variety of local themes like our struggling economy and homelessness.? January thru March of 2013, SPL has organized a series of photography lectures which will be presented at IKE Box Coffee Shop.

If you are a photographer interested in learning more about the SPL and opportunities in our community to use your skills to explore the area of documentary photography, contact Phil Decker, Salem Photo League facilitator through the SPL Facebook page or email at phildecker6@gmail.com.

?Photography Talk? Lecture Series Sharing the Vision of Gifted Photographers

The Salem Photo League is hosting the first annual ?Photography Talk? lecture series to highlight the work of accomplished regional photographers, consisting of a monthly lecture this January, February and March.? At each presentation there will be a door prize of a signed original print from the photographer.

?Photography Talk? was created to honor the work of talented artists, to inspire others within our artistic community, to encourage photographers to experiment with documentary projects, and to deepen collaboration among local arts organizations.

The first in the series is presented by Tom Patterson on January 17, 6:30-8:30pm.? Tom has served as an award-winning multimedia storyteller for the Statesman Journal since 2003. His work has appeared in dozens of publications, including The New York Times and USA Today.? Tom will delve into the photo assignment process and share some of his recent multimedia work.

Lectures are Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm,

JENNY GRAY- ABSTRACT COLOR
Jan 8 ? Feb 2
For the month of January, the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery will present the paintings by Monroe, Oregon artist Jenny Gray. Jenny?s work over the last few years has been about layers; covering, hiding, censoring and the control to show only part of her story. Gray often starts a painting with marks or colors representing specific emotions, places or people.? She then takes this raw ?information? and adds, subtracts, covers and layers her paintings. Jenny?s paintings are about being human, expressed through the paint, her paintings are also about the freedom of the paint itself; rough, fast, busy, quiet, thoughtful, hidden or in your face.? Often, Jenny?s work is influenced by a wide range of subjects; the northwest landscapes, barns, fences, typography, the desert and ephemera. Jenny is a graduate of San Jose State University, San Jose, California and currently lives in Monroe, Oregon. 12pm ? 5 pm. Mary Lou Zeek Gallery

Recommended Slow Cooker Recipes

slowcookingAs always, I?ve ?been slow cooking this week.? But, it?s been one of those weeks, I?ve been so busy I don?t know if I?m coming or going and to be honest I?m starting to drop a few balls.

Nothing this week really stood out to blog about so I thought I would dig through the archive and share a few of my more popular recipes.? Weirdly, my most popular recipe is still the first Slow Cooker Recipe I ever posted ?Green Thai Chicken Curry? back in August 2010.

My top 5

Thai Green Chicken Curry ? one of the most visited pages on my blog and if you want to have a go at your own paste check out the recipe on Just Annie QPR

Easy Slow Cooker Lamb Curry ? yes it involves jars but it?s still worthy, but as a busy mum I?m always up for a cheat.

Abruzzi Lamb ? perfect for a dinner party, I?ve served it time and time again and always gets rave reviews.

Butternut Squash and Chickpea Curry ? for my veggie friends!

Pesto Salmon Bake ? find me a kid that doesn?t love salmon.? Plus a bit of wine for mummy!

Now it?s your time to share.? There is a linky below;? recipes can be old or new and it doesn?t have to be your own recipe, just one that you know and love and have a website address.? Alternatively, you can email recipes to me mediocremum@gmail.com or leave your recipes in the comment section.

And if you need extra inspiration, don?t forget to check out our Pinterest Board, with over a hundred recipes.

Dressed to Kill...or to Be Really Organized | DIY and home ...

We have officially stepped up our organizational/storage game. Last weekend, we were traveling to Jersey City for a friend?s birthday and we couldn?t resist a ?quick? pit stop at good old IKEA in Elizabeth, NJ (the closest IKEA to us). As I mentioned in my last post, (which you can read here), we devised a plan for moving our dressers around + purchasing a new one to create more storage space. Here?s a quick re-cap:

We had 1 dresser in our office dedicated to a lot of Andrew?s clothes.
Office IKEA Malm Dresser

We had another dresser in our bedroom, which was for my clothes:
Bedroom IKEA Malm Dresser

The idea was to move the dresser in the bedroom, into the office, and place the 2 IKEA Malm dressers on one of the larger walls in our office, pictured here with the keyboard, pre-move:
Office wall

We purchased 1 new, 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser for the bedroom. So I have gained 1 drawer and Andrew has technically gained 3! Wall space in our bedroom is limited, so we figured if we can?t go out, go up! The 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser was just the right height to fit right under our wall-mounted TV, so we didn?t have to move that at all (whew)! Here?s what the bedroom dresser setup looks like now:

IKEA Malm 4-Drawer Dresser

Is it me, or does the room somehow look bigger?? You probably can?t really tell from this picture, but for some reason, this dresser makes things feel a bit roomier. Maybe because it?s taller than the previous it?s drawing my eyes up, creating the illusion of more space? Or maybe I?m just lost in space, who knows?either way, I love it! My things are at a better level and, of course, I gained an extra drawer. Now I can stop over-stuffing drawers and lay my clothes neatly?at least until I go on another shopping spree.

As for the office, the new setup looks like this, ?music nook? and dressers on the inside wall, respectively:

Office music nookOffice with IKEA Malm dressers

This I really love! We have definitely lost some floor space in this scenario, but this just makes more sense to me. I think this wall was meant to have these dressers spanning the greater part of it. In addition to gaining 3 more drawers in this room, we have also gained some more surfaces. I can?t wait to spice this space up with a little more decor. We?ve got some great plans for the surface of the dressers, as well as the wall space above them. As of right now, we?re thinking of definitely adding a table runner across the width of the dressers. Then maybe some new framed artwork and some other decorative finds. For the wall, we?re definitely thinking of finding a cheap/old mirror to gussy up and eventually hang above, maybe with some other accents around?? We?re not quite sure yet, but we?re pretty excited about this new take on the office.

Stick with us as we make more DIY and design decisions in our Fresh Nest! Andrew?s got a great post coming up about a project he tackled recently. In the meantime, follow me on Pinterest to see what?s inspiring me lately AND ?Like? us on Facebook to see some ?behind the scenes? photos from our life.

Your Home Is Your Castle. Keep It Up To Date And Beautiful With ...

For an elegant jewelry display, put up a wall-mounted coat rack with no curves. Only put costume jewelry here, not your prized heirlooms. Your signature pieces of jewelry can add a personal touch to your room?s decor and also keep your necklaces and bracelets tangle free. Keep your most commonly worn jewelry easy to get to.

TIP! To improve the appearance of your bathrooms, try giving them a new glaze. A glaze can brighten up a dingy bathroom, and can take it from looking worn to shiny and clean.

When you know how and what to do, you can get many things done. This holds true for the smallest task to the largest remodel. It?s all about what you know. The information included here, combined with proper tools and materials, will enable you to tackle many kinds of home improvement tasks.

Install a shower if you don?t already have one on the premises. Not only is a shower more convenient than a tub, but it also more cost effective. Short showers typically use as little as a quarter of the water that it takes to run a bath.

TIP! When repainting rooms in your house, look for no-VOC products. These paints don?t have the chemicals that are harmful to people or the environment.

Consider cleaning the carpets on a regular basis, your home will feel fresh and clean. Particularly in the places where your family often walks, use shampoo and a deep cleaning treatment. Your house will not only have a cleaner feel, but it will appear newer.

Soundproofing some of your interior walls can be a good investment. It would be quite luxurious to soundproof your entire home; however, this would be quite an expensive project. Bedrooms, bathrooms and equipment rooms are the most important to sound proof. The kitchen is a good candidate for soundproofing as long as it doesn?t open into many spaces.

TIP! Paint your home using colors that are neutral. Neutral colors will help you portray more space.

To keep electric costs down while illuminating your yard, change out your regular porch light for one that has a motion sensor. The light can still be turned on manually, and you can adjust the sensitivity on most models.

While some air conditioning units aren?t necessarily the most aesthetically appealing appliances on the market, they are essential in many locations across the country. It is easy to hide it with some nice latticework or any other feature. If you choose to hide the air conditioner with grass like pampas, remember to plant it a couple of feet away so that the roots will not eventually damage the unit.

TIP! When you plan to replace your siding, remember that it could be really expensive to install stucco on your home. It?s an attractive, durable improvement, but just be ready for the labor and for the price tag.

A great way to save money on your bills is to upgrade your heating/cooling system(s) in your home. You should especially do this if the system is 7 years old or older. A lot of central systems will reduce electricity at about 20 percent. Newer models often operate more quietly than older ones.

Before you begin customizing your home, settle on a specific style. Determine what style you wish to decorate your room in before you begin. It is easy to fall in the trap of switching styles in the middle of a project, and not seeing the error of your ways until it?s too late. By then, any changes made will be extremely expensive.

TIP! Installing a second bathroom in your residence will significantly enhance the value of the home. Another bathroom is also very useful, especially if you put it on another floor.

Install peepholes on your doors. You never know who?s standing outside on your porch unless you can see them, and seeing them before opening the door is important. Installing a peephole is a snap and costs very little. The only thing you must do is some drilling! A peephole will give you some peace of mind whenever you hear something outside.

If you buy a drain snake, it can save some money. This will prevent you from buying drain cleaners. A drain snake should not be used by someone who is inexperienced, so ask a plumber to show you the right way to use it. Ensure that you purchase a snake that properly fits your drain.

TIP! When you are looking for contractors, try to get comparable quotes from each company. Be sure to submit the same list of repairs and improvements to each contractor with no changes or additions.

It?s important to weigh out the positives and negatives of turning on your security system while your house is being shown. If you do not live in the home and the neighborhood is dangerous, you may want to have an alarm.

Replacing existing flooring is an easy way to update the look of your entire space. Floors can be an expensive home improvement, but they really are worth it and add value to your home. Replace carpet and linoleum with hardwood or tile, and you can increase the value of your home.

TIP! Write a list of things you have to do from the beginning to end. Obtain a second opinion from a trusted source to see if there are any steps you missed or anything you didn?t take into account.

Are you trying to sell your home? Small projects around the home can add up to increased value. Kitchen appliance replacement, or the offer to replace them, can entice buyers to purchase your home.

The improvements that are easily noticeable are very important. Your buyers are going to judge your home by what is visible and things like an overgrown garden or paint that is peeling can lose a sale in no time. Sometimes, the most important things are invisible, but that doesn?t count when you are selling the home.

TIP! You can use drywall mud to add texture and visual interest to your walls. This will also cover up any nicks or blemishes.

At least once a year, in the spring, be sure to take a close look at your roof, checking it for signs of damage. Damaged shingles will appear blistered or curled, and it is important that you replace them. Taking care of minor damage to your roof when you see it will prevent you from having to take care of major and expensive issues later.

When redoing your home?s exterior siding, stucco can be a nice alternative. Outside siding is easy and quick to install but you may need permits and professional assistance. Once installed, exterior siding will last for many years.

TIP! When it comes to successfully completing your next project, few things are as helpful as having the proper tools for the job. The right tools ensure the job is done right and done well.

Your outdoor chair cushions will eventually flatten as time goes by. To restore them, put the cushions outside in the sun. Doing this lets moisture evaporate from inside the fillings, and this reinstills some bounce. Make sure to flip the sides of the cushion, and don?t leave it out too long, as the sun can make the fabric colors fade.

When you replace your windows with energy efficient ones, you are conserving energy as well as money. Most homeowners are very satisfied with their decision to purchase new windows.

TIP! It is important to consider accessibility and safety when planning any home improvement project. For instance, a step-in shower can keep you safe since it reduces the falling risk.

Vinyl decks are popular with homeowners. It is important to clean the deck surface twice a year to keep it looking good and making sure that it is available for years of enjoyment to come. The best seasons to clean your vinyl deck are spring and fall.

You should frequently check on your septic tank. There are purchasable chemicals that will prevent overflow by speeding up the rate of decomposition. Be careful to not tamper with your home?s septic tank accidentally when you do any home improvement. If you have to, get a house plan and make sure you can carefully avoid costly damage.

TIP! If you are working in the kitchen, around fireplaces or anything else that has a gas line, make sure that you locate the gas shutoff before you begin your home improvement project. Exercising extreme caution will keep you and your family safe.

A cheap way to give a room a fresh look is by applying a new coat of paint to the walls. Pay a visit to a local hardware store to consider your different options for paint. Choose ones that are fun and you love, then just run with it! You could always paint it if you don?t like the color.

You can make window screens yourself if you have hard to fit windows. It?s easy to cut frame kits to fit a particular window size. After cutting, the next step is to simply attach the screen using a very inexpensive tool. Some windows require a special type of screen, but attaching an external screen is easy with adapters.

Lampshades with simple designs give no life to the room. Get cheap stencils at the crafts store, an ink pad or acrylic paint, and try dabbing the designs around the shade. This also adds personality to your entire room, and avoids the tedium of an ugly lamp.

It is important to pay any contractor with either a credit card or a check. In this way, you can avoid having unscrupulous contractors skip town with your down payment. Paying with a credit card is your smartest option since you are able to dispute the transaction even a few months after the payment.

Add some storage areas to your home by using old shoe boxes for loose items. Use leftover fabrics and wallpaper, and dress the shoe boxes to match your decor. It can really add a sense of playful drama to your room, and it is a cheap and effective storage solution!

If you think that you need to spruce up the look of the outside of the house, think about putting in a pergola. With its rich, natural wooden look, a pergola is perfect for adding shade, visual interest and texture to the exterior of your home. Enlist the help of some friends, and your pergola can be complete in a matter of a few days.

Remember your environment whenever you are making improvements to your home. For example, it is not a wise invest to install a sun room with no insulation in the colder climates. Do what is desired, but don?t go beyond your immediate climate needs.

The tips in the preceding paragraphs will certainly make it easier to do those home improvement projects that you?ve been putting off. By taking the time to learn what to do, you can complete your projects and improve the look and functionality of your home.

Cuba confirms Venezuela Alba1 fiber hookup, internet remains on lockdown

Cuba may only be positioned 100 or so miles from Key West, but the US embargo meant an undersea fiber link to North America hasn't been a possibility. Earlier this week, though, we began to see discussion regarding traffic passing through a connection to Venezuela, and ETECSA, a government-owned telecom provider, has now confirmed that a 994-mile cable has been operational since August, though in a limited capacity. On January 10th, ETECSA stepped up its utilization, testing the connection using "real traffic."

The $70-million Alba-1 cable, which has a reported lifespan of 25 years, was completed in February 2011, though it's not clear when, or if, citizens will see any benefit -- a statement explained that it "will not automatically mean an increase in access." That's not great news for Cubans, but at least Hugo Chavez now has the possibility of a direct link to his home country -- with a Netflix subscription and a VPN tunnel to the good ole US of A, his recovery could be a little more speedy.

'Hansel

'Hansel' has had a troubled production history and is an admittedly out-there twist on an old fairy tale. How are critics liking the film?

By Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer / January 25, 2013

'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' stars Jeremy Renner (r.) and Gemma Arterton (l.) as the titular siblings.

David Appleby/Paramount Pictures/AP

Fairy tales are still hot commodities in Hollywood, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons behind a new film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters." In the new spin on the story, Hansel and Gretel are all grown up and harboring a grudge against witches like the one who took them captive and was planning to eat them (seriously, fairy tales are way more grim than you remember).

The two siblings are protected from witches' curses, making them uniquely qualified to take on those who are causing problems. They work as bounty hunters who take care of witchy problems, and in this particular story, Hansel and Gretel take on a group of them led by lead witch Muriel (Famke Janssen).

"Hansel" has experienced a somewhat troubled production history, with its release date originally scheduled for March of last year. It was then moved up to earlier this month, Jan. 11, and then switched again to Jan. 25. A statement from the movie?s studio, Paramount, suggested that the second change took place to enable the movie to be released in IMAX.

?The Imax experience continues to be the most immersive and entertaining way to see films and we are thrilled to be releasing Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D now in late January so moviegoers have an opportunity to see the film in this way,? Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan told the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie was not screened for critics before its official release, and so far, the reviews that have been posted have been lukewarm.

David Voigt of Examiner.com said the movie has its entertaining moments but falls flat at other times.

"Hardly a movie that will ever run the risk of being taken with a completely straight face, this... is a film that has some fun gonzo moments appropriate with the genre, but ones that are also fairly restrained and doesn't do nearly far enough," Voigt wrote. "Heavy on the effects and the set pieces, it moves along at a fair enough pace but there are longs stretches where the film feels re-written and often drab."

Canada providing emergency help to Kenyans affected by flooding ...

January 24, 2013

OTTAWA?Canada is providing emergency shelter, health care, and water and sanitation to approximately 13,000 people across Kenya affected by floods and mudslides, announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation.

"Canada is providing immediate assistance to those affected by floods and mudslides in parts of Kenya," said Minister Fantino. "Canadian support is ensuring relief to those in greatest need."

Above-normal rainfall has resulted in flooding and mudslides in many areas of central and western Kenya. According to the Kenyan Red Cross, more than 2,100 households have been affected by the flooding, with homes, crops and livestock being destroyed, while mudslides have claimed the lives of 13 people to date. In addition, more than 750 persons have been displaced, seeking shelter in schools, churches, shopping centres and within hosting communities. The spread of water-borne disease remains a serious concern in flooded areas.

Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency, is providing support to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to deliver this immediate assistance.

The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that humanitarian needs are met.
