'Fast and the Furious': A Progressive Force?

The cast of Fast Five, the latest film in the Fast and the Furious franchise.

Another installment of the Fast and the Furious movie franchise races into theaters this weekend. The film, Fast Five ? with its fast cars, fast women and sun-kissed backdrops ? is the fourth sequel in the hugely successful Fast and the Furious movies.

The films haven't charmed most critics. But Wesley Morris, film critic for the Boston Globe, calls these bang-'em-up, speed flicks "the most progressive force in Hollywood."

"Basically it promotes race as this very normal thing," Morris tells NPR's Michele Norris. "Around these cars are these very different types of people, but it's not the subject of the movie like it is in most Hollywood movies. Race is just a matter of fact."

Race, he says, "has just sort of exploded into such a thing in these movies that it almost doesn't even matter."

Morris guesses that Vin Diesel, the movie's multi-ethnic star and producer, may have been behind the film's progressive approach.

"I think he's one of those people who's frequently annoyed by having to deal with and answer questions about 'What are you? What background are you?' " Morris says. "And I think one of the things he wants to try to do with these movies ? whether consciously or not ? in achieving that effect is to sort of eliminate race as a point of conflict and use race as a sort of point of normalcy, which I think is a really revolutionary thing to be able to try to do and achieve."

The movies themselves have been criticized for lacking depth, and recently, The Onion joked that the latest installment had been written by a 5-year-old screenwriter whose goal was to make cars go fast and explode.

"I think there's a degree to which the infantile aspect of the way the movies are laid out serves as a really interesting corollary to how this race thing functions. The audience that sees this movie isn't going to leave this movie saying, 'Wow, it was so awesome to see all those people of color just hanging out like normal.' That's their life. There's nothing to talk about. It's taken for granted. That's just the way it is. But that's not normal in Hollywood."

He points to The Blind Side, which came out in 2009 and stars Sandra Bullock as a white Southern woman who takes in a homeless black teenager.

"You'd think the story would be about him, and having a bad mother and being virtually homeless and not having any options and this woman comes into his life. But the movie is actually about the woman and how good it is that she's brought this kid into her life," Morris says. "It's a vehicle for goodness, and by extension it sort of tells the history of race in Hollywood. It fosters a very familiar liberal idea, which is, 'I, white person, will make myself feel better by bringing you, black person, into my life.' "

While the Fast and the Furious franchise may make strides as a progressive force, Morris admits the women in the films are one-dimensional. However, he notes, pretty much everyone on-screen gets the same treatment.

"I just feel like all the characters are shallow, not just the women," he says. "It's an equal-opportunity shallow here."

But Morris says that in the end, that just doesn't matter.

"I do think that part of the popularity of this series is that it looks like the world that a lot of the people who pay money to see these movies, it looks like the world they live in. And that isn't ever really the case in most Hollywood movies, even in 2011," he says.

Dancing With the Stars Shocker: A Favorite Goes Home!

All seven and we watched one fall.

Ralph Macchio hadn't been in jeopardy all season on Dancing With the Stars, so why would Karina Smirnoff's stumble pull him down this week?

Well, perhaps because it was jeopardy-by-numbers tonight as the celebs with the highest scores?Romeo, Chelsea Kane, Hines Ward and Kirstie Alley?all got to be safe right away for a change, leaving the remaining three to wait it out.

Through the Pia Toscano performance (and her subsequent grilling by Tom Bergeron) and everything.

MORE: After Dancing, Karina explains her tumble, Romeo kisses and tells

But though it was a close shave for Ralph, it was wrestler Chris Jericho who got pinned in last place and didn't get enough votes to go another round.

And though we're sad to see him go, Chris may have offered the best goodbye remarks yet.

"It's actually good timing that I got eliminated because I have to fly over to England for the royal wedding, you know, so it was going to affect rehearsal," he joked with partner Cheryl Burke smiling at his side.

"But actually, let's be honest, it wasn't my best dance and at this point in the competition you have to be at your best every week or this is what happens. But I'd like to say I'm proud of all the dances we did, and I'm proud to show that a WWE guy and a rock 'n' roll singer can go this far and do this."

"The only reason I got this far was because of Cheryl," Chris added. "She's a great performer, she's become a friend for life...I haven't seen my kids in four weeks, so it's time for Chris Jericho the Dancer to step aside and Chris Jericho the Daddy to come back."

Awww.

Happily for Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett, she was not voted off after she scored the weekly encore with her bouncy samba, proving that a reality-TV star and a self-professed tomboy can go this far and do this.

Since the elimination was a rough one, we have to say the highlight of the night was Donnie Wahlberg and former Dancing contestant Joey McIntyre ending the NKOTBSB medley of "I Want It That Way" and "Step by Step" by showing off some moves with a couple of the female DWTS pros.

Joey, sure, but Donnie? Who knew?!

Tom Bergeron also was a one-man highlight reel, as usual.

Tom Bergeron, the guy who passed on talking to Chris Brown on-camera as a precaution, of course put the tough question to Pia about her reported relationship with Dancing pro Mark Ballas, who performed with Karina while the American Idol castoff sang "I'll Stand by You."

He didn't ask if they were dating, only if Mark was a good kisser.

"He's a wonderful person," Pia replied deftly.

The remaining six continue their quest for the mirror-ball trophy next Monday.

WATCH: The judges wanted more of Kendra's samba

WWI: The Battle That Split Europe, And Families

To End All Wars
By Adam Hochschild
Hardcover, 480 pages
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
List price: $28

The city had never seen such a parade. Nearly 50,000 brilliantly uniformed troops converged on St. Paul's Cathedral in two great columns. One was led by the country's most beloved military hero, the mild-mannered Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar, a mere five feet two inches in height, astride a white Arabian horse like those he had ridden during more than 40 years of routing assorted Afghans, Indians, and Burmese who had the temerity to rebel against British rule. Mounted at the head of the other column, at six feet eight inches, was the tallest man in the army, Captain Oswald Ames of the Life Guards, wearing his regiments traditional breastplate, which, with the sunlight glinting off it, seemed as if it might deflect an enemy's lance by its dazzling gleam alone. His silver helmet topped with along horsehair panache made him appear taller still.

It was June 22, 1897, and London had spent ?250,000 ? the equivalent of more than $30 million today ? on street decorations alone. Above the marching troops, Union Jacks flew from every building; blue, red, and white bunting and garlands adorned balconies; and lampposts were bedecked with baskets of flowers. From throughout the British Empire came foot soldiers and the elite troops of the cavalry: New South Wales Lancers from Australia, the Trinidad Light Horse, South Africa's Cape Mounted Rifles, Canadian Hussars, Zaptich horse-men from Cyprus in tasseled fezzes, and bearded lancers from the Punjab. Rooftops, balconies, and special bleachers built for this day were packed. A triumphal archway near Paddington station was emblazoned"Our Hearts Her Throne." On the Bank of England appeared"She Wrought Her People Lasting Good." Dignitaries filled the carriages that rolled along the parade route ? the papal nuncio shared one with the envoy of the Chinese Emperor ? but the most thunderous cheers were reserved for the royal carriage, drawn by eight cream-colored horses. Queen Victoria, holding a black lace parasol and nodding to the crowds, was marking the 60th anniversary of her ascent to the throne. Her black moire dress was embroidered with silver roses, thistles, and shamrocks, symbols of the united lands at the pinnacle of the British Empire: England, Scotland, and Ireland.

The sun emerged patriotically from an overcast sky just after the Queen's carriage left Buckingham Palace. The dumpy monarch, whose round, no-nonsense face no portrait painter or photographer ever seems to have caught in a smile, presided over the largest empire the world had ever seen. For this great day a clothier advertised a "Diamond Jubilee Lace Shirt," poets wrote Jubilee odes, and Sir Arthur Sullivan, of Gilbert and Sullivan, composed a Jubilee hymn. "How many millions of years has the sun stood in heaven?" said the Daily Mail. "But the sun never looked down until yesterday upon the embodiment of so much energy and power."

Victoria's empire was not known for its modesty. "I contend that we are the first race in the world," the future diamond mogul Cecil Rhodes declared when still an Oxford undergraduate, "and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race." Later, he went on to say, "I would annex the planets if I could." No other celestial body yet sported the Union Jack, but British territory did cover nearly a quarter of the earth. To be sure, some of that land was barren Arctic tundra belonging to Canada, which was in effect an independent country. But most Canadians ? French-speakers and native Indians largely excepted ? were happy to think of themselves as subjects of the Queen this splendid day, and the nation's prime minister, although a Francophone, had made a voyage to England to attend the Diamond Jubilee and accept a knighthood. True, a few of the territories optimistically colored pink on the map, such as the Transvaal republic in South Africa, did not think of themselves as British at all. Nonetheless, Transvaal President Paul Kruger released two Englishmen from jail in honor of the Jubilee. In India, the Nizam of Hyderabad, who also did not consider himself subservient to the British, marked the occasion by setting free every tenth convict in his prisons. Gunboats in Cape Town harbor fired a salute, Rangoon staged a ball, Australia issued extra food and clothing to the Aborigines, and in Zanzibar the sultan held a Jubilee banquet.

At this moment of celebration, even foreigners forgave the British their sins. In Paris, Le Figaro declared that imperial Rome was "equaled, if not surpassed," by Victoria's realm; across the Atlantic, the New York Times virtually claimed membership in the empire: "We are a part, and a great part, of the Greater Britain which seems so plainly destined to dominate this planet." In the Queen's honor, Santa Monica, California, held a sports festival, and a contingent of the Vermont National Guard crossed the border to join a Jubilee parade in Montreal. Victoria was overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection and loyalty, and at times during the day her usually impassive face was streaked with tears. The overseas cables had been kept clear of traffic until, at Buckingham Palace, the Queen pressed an electric button linked to the Central Telegraph Office. From there, as the assorted lancers, hussars, camel troopers, turbaned Sikhs, Borneo Dayak police, and Royal Niger Constabulary marched through the city, her greeting flashed in Morse code to every part of the empire, Barbados to Ceylon, Nairobi to Hong Kong: "From my heart I thank my beloved people. May God bless them."

Boal Writing Up Bin Laden Demise For Hurt Locker Follow-up

45 minutes ago | WENN | See recent WENN news ?

Oscar-winning writer/producer Mark Boal is busy turning Osama Bin Laden's death into a dramatic climax for his upcoming screenplay about the search for the Al-Qaeda leader.

Boal and his The Hurt Locker partner and director Kathryn Bigelow have been working on the script about operatives on the hunt for bin Laden since they won gold for the 2009 war movie - and now they have a solid ending, according to a Variety exclusive.

Their new film reportedly centres on the team that wound up killing bin Laden on Sunday.

Sources close to Boal tell Variety that the fire-fight at the compound in Pakistan where bin Laden was found and killed will feature in the film.

The publication reports Boal had been following the mission to seek out bin Laden, thanks to his access to military intelligence.

Casting for the hard-hitting movie is underway and Bigelow is expected to start shooting this summer.

Surprise Elimination on Dancing with the Stars

Surprise Elimination on Dancing with the Stars | Brooke Burke, Tom Bergeron

Adam Taylor/ABC/Getty

Down to a half-dozen pairs, some tied or separated by just a point this week, the decision of who stays and who survives on Dancing with the Stars is getting tougher.

The low scorers after Monday night's performances also are among the audience favorites: Kendra Wilkinson, Kirstie Alley and Romeo.

When it was all over Tuesday night, viewers got a mild shock. Was it one of those three or somebody else who was sent home? Read on...

Week after week she charmed fans with her girl-next-door sex appeal even as she struggled with the technical aspects of ballroom dance, and now it's over for Kendra Wilkinson.

She was eliminated even though she finished ahead of Alley and Romeo this week with 31 points to their 30 apiece.

"I've lasted seven weeks ? seven weeks longer than I ever thought I would last," said Wilkinson, who thanked her pro partner, Louis van Amstel, and the two Hanks in her life: her husband and son.

"I'm not the best dancer but I am the best mom," she said. "I'm back to being a mom."

Carriers crack down on Android tethering apps, rain on our mobile hotspot parade

Android Tethering Apps
Well everybody, it looks like the free ride is over: carriers in the US have started to seriously crack down on Android tethering apps. Head on over to the Android Market site and try to install an app that turns your smartphone into a WiFi hotspot -- there's a pretty good chance you'll be told, "this item is not available on your carrier." We checked out a number of different tethering options and they were all blocked by T-mobile and AT&T, which isn't entirely new. Verizon has also joined the party and, while it missed at least one that we spotted, we're sure they'll all be gone in short order. Only Sprint has decided against banning such apps... for now. It looks like you might have to finally cough up for that tethering plan you've been desperately trying to avoid.
